A skit gets a few hundred views. Another clip, filmed beside a window with no special equipment, reaches people who have never visited your profile. What changed?
Start by examining the video: who it was for, what appeared first, and whether the promised payoff arrived. Those questions give you something useful to improve. Adding another #fyp hashtag gives you much less to work with.
Understand what the For You page is choosing
The For You page is personalised to each viewer. Your video can appear on some people’s feeds without reaching a large audience. Getting some For You traffic and receiving wide distribution are different outcomes.
TikTok says recommendations consider user interactions, content information and user information. Interactions include watching in full, skipping, liking, commenting and sharing. Content signals include sounds and hashtags; user information includes language and location. For most users, interactions such as time spent watching generally carry more weight than the other factors. See TikTok’s explanation of recommendations.
Your first task: write down one person your next video should interest. “Someone in Ibadan choosing a birthday cake” is a more useful brief than “everybody in Nigeria”. Build the video around that person’s question, taste or problem.
Make the opening prove the video is relevant
Watch your draft’s first few seconds without the caption. Can a stranger tell what they will get? A logo animation or “Hello guys, welcome back” can delay the reason to stay.
Try an opening that shows the subject immediately:
- Fashion seller: show the same trousers on two body types, with “How this cut fits” on screen.
- Comedian: begin with the awkward request that creates the conflict, then reveal the characters.
- Musician: start with the memorable lyric or musical phrase, then give the song’s context.
- Food vendor: show the actual portion and current price before introducing your business.
For a meal advertised at ₦5,000, show exactly what that amount includes. If delivery costs extra, make that clear. An opening should create an accurate expectation that the rest of the video fulfils.

Edit towards a payoff, not a magic duration
A useful editing question is: “What does the viewer get by staying?” It might be a punchline, a finished hairstyle, a practical answer or the next line of a song.
There is no universal video length or completion percentage that guarantees For You distribution. A short clip can feel slow; a longer demonstration can earn attention throughout. Choose the length the idea needs.
Run this editing pass before uploading:
- Identify the promised result or reveal.
- Cut repeated explanations and pauses that add nothing.
- Move necessary evidence closer to the claim it supports.
- End when the payoff is complete, unless a next step genuinely helps.
If you promise to demonstrate how a wig stays secure, show the fastening and a movement test. Avoid spending most of the clip describing the packaging. For comedy, keep pauses that build tension; remove pauses caused by searching for your next line.
Give the right audience clear context
Use wording that makes the subject understandable. “Abuja lunch delivery: today’s rice portions” tells a potential customer more than “You won’t believe this”. Put essential context in the video and use the caption to add useful details.
Use English, Pidgin, Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo or another language when it suits your intended audience. Add readable subtitles if they help people follow the dialogue. Check automatic captions, especially names, locations and prices.
Choose hashtags that describe the actual topic. A makeup tutorial for oily skin needs that context more than a long block of unrelated trending tags. Treat hashtags as labels, not a distribution guarantee.
Before joining a sound trend, ask whether the sound improves the joke, demonstration or performance. If viewers need to hear your explanation, keep background music low enough for speech to remain clear.
Check eligibility before diagnosing poor reach
A video being available on your profile does not automatically make it eligible for recommendation. TikTok applies additional For You feed eligibility standards. Check any eligibility notice and use the available appeal option if you believe the decision is wrong.
Review your source footage too. Upload your own clean export instead of downloading a repost of your video from another account. TikTok’s integrity rules address unoriginal content without creative changes and artificial engagement.
Purchased engagement cannot guarantee interested viewers, sustained attention or For You placement. Artificial engagement also carries platform policy risks. If reach is weak, investigate the content and any notices before spending money to increase the visible count.

Use analytics to choose one change
Where available, inspect each post’s traffic sources, average watch time, completion information and retention graph. For You traffic shows that recommendations contributed views; a low total alone does not establish why distribution was limited.
Compare videos of similar lengths and subjects. Use the following as working hypotheses, rather than automatic diagnoses:
- Viewers leave near the start: test an opening that shows the subject sooner.
- A drop appears during an explanation: shorten that section or demonstrate the point visually.
- People watch but ask basic questions: make the price, location or process clearer.
- A post reaches people but brings few enquiries: check whether it attracts potential customers and gives them a practical next step.
Record the observation and your proposed change in your phone’s notes. Avoid declaring a rule from one successful or disappointing upload.
Run a small test without burning data
Choose one idea and make three distinct videos around it. A cake maker could show portion size, explain transport packaging and demonstrate the finished design. Give each a direct opening and a complete payoff.
Film together while you have daylight and power. Edit locally, keep your original files, and review drafts before connecting for uploads. This reduces unnecessary transfers when data is metered.
After each video has had time to gather views, compare the available analytics at similar intervals. Keep the strongest lesson, then test one change in the next batch. The useful question is specific: did showing the finished cake first hold attention better than opening with the mixing bowl? That answer can improve your next video without pretending you control the feed.
